Variation in Fatherhood Timing by Relationship Status at Birth

Since the 1980s, fathers have entered parenthood at increasingly later ages, reaching an average age of 27.8 years old by 2011-13. However, as shown in the figure below, this varies by fathers' relationship status when their first child was born, according to a new NCFMR Family Profile. Fathers who were married when their first child was born entered parenthood at the highest age (29.4 years old). Married fathers' entry into fatherhood is, on average, three years later than fathers who were cohabiting and almost eight years later than single fathers. The full family profile, Over 25 Years of Change in Men's Entry into Fatherhood 1987-2013 (FP-16-10), documents trends in the age at which first children were born among fathers aged 40-45. The NFCMR investigates trends by relationship status, race/ethnicity, and education level among fathers in 2011/2013.
