Stepfamilies More Common in Second and Third Unions

Many of today's cohabitations and marriages involve individuals who have children from a past relationship, which means they are forming stepfamilies. We explore the stepfamily experiences of women aged 15-44 in a new NCFMR profile, Stepfamilies in the U.S. (FP-16-09). A quarter of women's first unions involve at least one person who is already a parent, and this rises to 65% of second unions and 74% of third unions. Stepfamilies occur more often in first unions that begin as a cohabitation (28%) rather than a direct marriage (14%), but this pattern shifts for second and third unions. There is also variation in which partner has children across union order. The full profile describes women's stepfamily experiences in their cohabiting and marital unions in more detail.
