'Marriage Premium' Continues to Have Educational Gradient

The past few decades have witnessed dramatic economic changes, and these changes have particularly affected less-educated men's employment and earning prospects. But the Great Recession in the last decade has rippled throughout the economy and across social classes. In a newly released profile, Trends in Men's Economic Characteristics and Marriage (FP-16-06), the NCFMR documents trends in employment, income, and marriage over the past decade, with an emphasis on differences in education. The proportion of men who are married fell between 2005 and 2015, but the changes were largest for men working part-time and unemployed men. Among men working full-time, nearly all educational groups exhibited declines in median personal income over the past decade, but the magnitude of the decline differed across education and marital status. This altered the 'marriage premium' - the difference between married and unmarried men's income. There remains a persistent educational gradient in the marriage premium, but college-educated men experienced the largest absolute decline in the premium between 2005 and 2015. The full profile contains more information on the shifts in men's economic characteristics and marital status.
