Change in Nonmarital Births
New Family Profiles Series

As American women increasingly postpone marriage but not childbearing, the share of births to unmarried mothers has increased since the 1990s. However, not all births occurring outside of marriage are to women who have never been married, due in part to high levels of divorce. In a newly released Family Profiles Series, Change in Nonmarital Births, the NCFMR presents a quarter century of change in births to never and previously married women in the U.S. Between 1990 and 2013, the share of nonmarital births to never married women increased while the proportion of nonmarital births to previously married women declined. The shift mostly reflects the increasing births to never married cohabiting women over the past 2.5 decades. The relationship context of births to never married women shifted from single to cohabiting unions, but the context of births to previously married women changed little over time. The profiles further describe the narrowing racial/ethnic gap and the persistently wide educational differences in nonmarital fertility in the U.S.
