Midlife Childlessness Trends Differ by Marital Status

Childlessness is on the rise. The decoupling of marriage and childbearing may shape marital status differentials in childlessness. Using data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), the new NCFMR profile Childlessness and Marital Status Among Middle-aged U.S. Adults, 1992-2012 (FP-16-02) examines the prevalence of childlessness among never versus currently married middle-aged adults (aged 51 to 61) in 1992 and 2012. For midlife never marrieds, childless is less common nowadays, falling from 81% in 1992 to 63% in 2012. In contrast, childlessness is increasing among married middle-aged adults, nearly doubling between 1992 and 2012. Only 6% of midlife marrieds were childless in 1992 versus 11% in 2012.
