Previously Married Adults Are Key to Changing Patterns of Cohabitation in the U.S.

Cohabitation is increasing among never married and previously married adults in the U.S. Over the past two decades, the share of never married adults living with cohabiting partners doubled from 7% to 14%, while the share of previously married adults in a cohabiting union increased by 57%, from 7% in 1995 to 11% in 2014. Among cohabiting couples, the composition is shifting in favor of never married adults. In 1995, the majority (60%) of cohabiting couples included at least one previously married partner, more than half (53%) of recent cohabiting unions involved two never married adults. To read more about how cohabitation is changing among never married and previously married adults in the U.S., check out the new NCFMR profile on Trends in Cohabitation: The Never Married and Previously Married, 1995-2014 (FP-15-21).
