Share of Children Born Out of Wedlock Has Doubled Since the '80s

The share of children born to unmarried parents has doubled since the 1980s - in large part due to increases in births to cohabiting mothers. Since the mid-1990s, at least half of non-marital births occurred in cohabiting unions. There is also some evidence that the increase in unwed childbearing has slowed since the mid-2000s. A recently released NCFMR profile, Trends in Births to Single and Cohabiting Mothers, 1980-2013 (FP-15-03), examines race/ethnicity and educational variation in these trends.
