Two-thirds of Women Have Ever Cohabited

Cohabitation is on the rise. Just in the last five years, the share of women who ever cohabited increased by 10%. Over the last 25 years, the share who ever cohabited nearly doubled. A new NCFMR profile, Twenty-five Years of Change in Cohabitation in the U.S., 1987-2013 (FP-15-01), shows changes in women's cohabitation experience according to race/ethnicity and education level. The growth in cohabitation has been smallest among young adults (19-24). Additional analyses (presented in the profile) show that recent increases are greatest among those having at least some college experience.
