Marital Status of American Population Reaches 40-year Lows (and Highs)

The share of married Americans has reached a 40-year low, while the share divorced is at a 40-year high. Since 1970, the percentage of Americans who are married has dropped by one-quarter. In contrast, the share who are divorced has increased more than six-fold. There has also been a 31% increase in the share of Americans who are never-married. For more information on the marital status composition of the American population including state variation in the proportion married, please see our latest Family Profile: Marital Status in the U.S., 2012.
