Two Decades of Stability and Change in Age at First Union

Over the past two decades, the median age of women's first marriage and first cohabitation has diverged. While the age at first marriage has increased by three years, the median age of women's first cohabitation has remained relatively stable. This stability in age at cohabitation is evident despite a near doubling in the proportion of women who report ever cohabiting, increasing from 33% in the mid-80s to 63% in the late-2000s.
