Welcome

The National Center for Family & Marriage Research (NCFMR), established in 2007 at Bowling Green State University (BGSU), welcomes you to our monthly electronic newsletter News and Notes.

News and Notes aims to inform you about the activities of the NCFMR. We will update you on current research findings and trends, announce training opportunities, and provide registration details for upcoming conferences and workshops.

Living Alone in the U.S., 2011

NCFMR research finds one-person households in the U.S. are currently the second most common household type after married-couple households, representing a 108% increase between 1960 and 2012. A variety of factors contribute to this increase including:
  • longer life expectancies,
  • better financial security,
  • increasing divorce rates among middle-aged to older adults, and
  • rise in the median age of first marriage and first birth.
