Swisher Speaks at The White House
Dr. Raymond Swisher, NCFMR Research Affiliate and BGSU Associate Professor of Sociology, was invited to speak at a White House conference, Parental Incarceration in the United States: Bringing Together Research and Policy to Reduce Collateral Costs to Children, that is funded in part by the National Science Foundation. The conference offers an opportunity for dialogue and collaboration among researchers, practitioners, and policy makers across professional disciplines and policy sectors.
Additionally, the conference:
- reviews current knowledge about parental imprisonment and child well-being;
- documents programs designed to reduce negative effects of parental incarceration on children;
- addresses problems stemming from parental involvement with the justice system; and
- identifies best practices for improving the lives of children of incarcerated parents.
Swisher addresses the topic of parental incarceration and adolescent depression and delinquency. His research on the topic (co-authored with former NCFMR Postdoctoral Fellow Michael Roettger) has been published in the Journal of Research on Adolescence. Key findings are also showcased in a Scholars Strategy Network Scholar Spotlight.The NCFMR just released a report on a new data set, the NCFMR Survey of Criminal Justice Experience. In addition, we offer a variety of incarceration Data Resources, such as Working Papers, Family Profiles, and Measures Snapshots.
