The Crossover: Trends in Median Ages at First Marriage and First Birth among Women

The NCFMR has released an updated version of the Family Profile documenting the crossover in women's median ages at first birth and first marriage. During the 1980s, women's median age at first marriage was higher than their median age at first birth. This pattern changed course beginning in 1991, with a crossover in the trend. Since then, women's median age at first birth is lower than their median age at first marriage. The rapid rise in the median age at first marriage has outstripped the comparatively modest increase in the median age at first birth.

Public Assistance Receipt among Poor Children

In 2010, 65% of children in poverty received SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - formerly known as Food Stamps) assistance, and 13% received public cash assistance (including TANF - Temporary Assistance for Needy Families). Child poverty tends to be highest in Southern states. These same states typically have the lowest rates of assistance receipt among poor children, with just 4-5% receiving both forms of assistance. States with the highest rates of receipt of both forms of assistance (15%-43%) are mostly in the Northeast and West. Three of the five states with the highest rates of receipt of both SNAP and cash assistance have child poverty rates well below the national average.
