Wives Contributing More to Total Couple Earnings

Married women's labor force participation continues to grow, making dual earner marriages the new normal in the U.S. Economic shocks, including the Great Recession (2007-2009), have the potential to shift gendered earnings dynamics among married couples. Among dual-earner married couples, more wives out earn their husbands today than five years ago. The percentage of wives earning more than their husbands increased from 13% in 2006 to 16% in 2011. Conversely, the percentage of women earning less dropped from 52% to 49%.
