Salt, Sugar, Sex: As those of you have attended our after hours seminars know, I started off this series of talks focusing on these three topics. Fascinated and intrigued how these relate to our biology and health, it came as a surprise when I saw the recently titled book by Michael Moss SALT, SUGAR, FAT on Television and on the Radio, discussing his not dissimilar interests. My take on these topics is based on the connection they all have to the adrenal glands and how these hormones control these three aspects of our lives, while Mr. Moss uses these issues to explore our connection to food and the processed food industry. Simply put: Salt, Sugar, and Fat are the triumvirate of mass marketed food companies -- Kraft, Nestle, Cargill, Coca Cola, and Frito Lay. With clarity and ample research, Mr. Moss explains how our biological connection with these substances is exploited by the food industry, and through their perfection of products that 'push us to our bliss point' and make us crave unhealthy foods beyond our normal limits. How we are controlled and how it has affected our health is the main focus of this book. If you want to stay healthy, and achieve more insight into good eating habits, I recommend Mr. Moss' book, and recommend you look for mine ...coming at a future date.
Yours in good health,
Dr. Lakin

Is Hay Fever Linked To Fast Food?
|
Test your spring allergy smarts and see what's true and what's not: True or false: Hay fever is linked to fast food. For kids, this might be true. A large international study found that children and teens who had three or more fast-food meals a week were associated with an increased risk of severe seasonal allergies (as well as asthma and eczema). It doesn't prove a burger and fries cause hay fever, nor that skipping them will reduce the severity of spring sniffles, but it could be one more reason to limit fast food. True or false: Symptoms generally stop when exposure to allergens ends. True. It's impossible to completely avoid the billions of tiny pollens floating in the air, but you can limit contact. Close house and car windows, use allergy-grade filters in your air conditioning and furnace, minimize outdoor activity when pollen counts are high, and shower when you come inside. True or false: Wait for congestion before taking meds. False. Most hay fever medications work best if started just before pollen season. That's because if you have allergies, your immune system mistakenly identifies the allergen as an intruder, and responds by releasing histamines and other chemicals that cause symptoms. If you take the drug before coming into contact with pollen, it can inhibit the release of histamine and prevent or reduce the severity of symptoms. Your doctor can help determine medicines that are best for you, and when to start. True or false: Some fruits and veggies make hay fever worse. True. About one-third of seasonal allergy sufferers also have oral allergy syndrome, in which proteins in some produce are similar to those in pollen. The allergic reaction is pretty much the same. -The Doctors, USA Weekend

Experts Say Mini-meals Are In Your Future
|
You'll eat smaller, more frequent meals this year, predicts Phil Lempert, a food marketing expert known as the Supermarket Guru. Behind the trend? "Doctors and registered dietitians all say that having five to six smaller meals a day helps with digestion," Lempert says. "And people want to mix it up when it comes to what they're eating." Here's what he sees:
Protein options. As meat costs rise, people seek affordable protein. Result: more nut-based snacks such as almonds flavored with dark chocolate or wasabi, and more people eating sunflower seeds. Roasted chickpeas, too.
Better portion control. When 100-calorie packaged items were introduced, people complained about small portions. The solution: new flavor choices. An Oreo or Fig Newton 100-calorie package doesn't contain much volume. "But if they are dipped in chocolate, when we have a flavor that makes our mouth go 'wow,' we're accepting of the smaller portions."
Smarter nuking. New microwave steaming trays and other packaging innovations make it easier to create well-heated food quickly. Result: "Smaller [package] sizes, so you can create your own smorgasbord on the dinner table."
Snack breakfast. Picture a one-egg mini-omelet. "We have seen the happy-hour phenomenon at lunch and dinner. I think we'll see it at breakfast."

Know Your Personality Flaw. . . .
| Ways to counteract your flaws Why do some people seem doomed to repeat the same mistakes? It all comes down to personality type, says Caroline Myss, author of Archetypes: Who Are You? "It changes everything about how deeply you understand yourself and everyone around you," she explains. She sketches three common archetypes and suggests ways to counteract their flaws:
The Saboteur. If you fail to live up to potential, you grow resentful and "you will sink your own ship" by self-victimizing and blaming others. Instead, try to see setbacks as growth opportunities.
The Rescuer. If you thrive on "saving" others, you make them need you but feel rejected and unloved if they don't gush with gratitude. Once you realize this, ask yourself, "What really is love and what is a healthy relationship?"
The Princess and Knight. Some women dream of a Knight in Shining Armor, while some men aspire to marry their very own Princess. These archetypes are unhealthy because "the myth does not play out and the illusion is shattered." Antidote: Resist the urge to blame the other person; give up your fairy-tale expectations.

Recipe: Stir-fry with Asian Greens
|
. The bounty of spring reminds us that you don't have to have a green thumb or be a budding chef to have the garden turn you into a cook. "Raising the ingredients yourself is inspiring and makes you want to be in the kitchen," says author Barbara Damrosch, whose new gardening/cookbook is a primer for people who want to grow and eat their own food. "The vegetables are your babies, and you're proud of them." In this, her third book, Damrosch shares her best seasonal recipes - even if your produce comes from a farmers market or the grocery store. Because when you focus on what's fresh and ripe, everything else falls into place.
Stir-Fry with Asian Greens - 2 Tbs.toasted sesame oil or peanut oil
- 1clove garlic, peeled andm inced
- 1piece (1 inch long) fresh ginger, peeled and cut into thin matchsticks
- 8 ounces snow peas (about 2 cups), strings removed, if any
- 8 scallions, white parts and green tops chopped separately into 1-inch pieces
- 2 to 3 heads (about 8 ounces) baby bok choy (pac choi),white bottoms and green tops chopped separately into 1-inch pieces (you can substitute coarsely chopped leaves and stems of swiss chard, broccoli florets or cauliflower florets)
- 6 medium-size red radishes, thinly sliced
- 1Tb. soy sauce
Heat the sesame oil in a large skillet over medium heat until fragrant, 1 to 2 minutes. Add the garlic and ginger and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly, to flavor the oil. Immediately add the snow peas, scallion whites, and bok choy bottoms. Stir-fry until the vegetables are tender but still have some crunch, about 3 minutes. Add the scallion greens and stir-fry for 1 minute. Add the bok choy tops, stir-fry for 30 seconds, and then remove the skillet from the heat. Add the radishes and soy sauce, and stir to combine. Serve immediately. Note: To make this a main dish, add seafood or chicken (4 to 8 ounces per person); brown separately and then add in at the end. Yield: 4 servings as a side dish Per serving: 116 calories, 10g carbohydrates, 3g protein, 7g fat (1g saturated), 4g fiber, 0mg cholesterol, 277mg sodium
