Hello BarbieWho Could Have Imagined Mattel's Magically Techy Move to Make Smart Toys?

Silicon Dragon's annual LA event kicks off with a chat with Henry Hsiao who heads up a new group at Mattel that looks after innovations and emerging technologies. It's sure to be an engaging talk because Mattel is in the midst of a transformation that takes this iconic toy company into the age of the Internet of Things.
The eight-person team that Hsiao leads in El Segundo is looking to startups, venture capital and acquisitions to transform Mattel from an old-fashioned toy maker known around the world to a globally recognized creator of learning development gadgets and playthings - a sort of nursery of the future.
Take Mattel's acquisition early this year of San Francisco-based startup Sproutling, maker of a smart monitor for babies worn on an ankle to measure skin temperature, heart rate and motion.
Or Mattel's look to China for innovations that are customized for the large Chinese market.
Henry Hsiao takes the stage 8:30AM at
Silicon Dragon LA 2016 at the Pasadena Convention Center to delve into the strategies and technologies that today make the classic Barbie doll speak (among many other creations).

PLIGHT OF UNICORNS
"We're seeing some distress for startups especially among the smaller, younger unicorns," said Jarod Ji, an analyst at Zero2IPO, a Beijing-based research firm that tracks VC and private equity markets. "Most of these companies aren't profitable, and investors are getting increasingly wary of their burn rates."  (Bloomberg)

CHINESE INVESTMENT IS HERE TO STAY
Chinese FDI in the U.S. is breaking records this year, more than $8 billion in the first quarter alone.   East West Bank CEO Dominic Ng says Chinese investment in the U.S. is here to stay - and not just due to China's slowing economy and currency volatility. He warns though that politics may get in the way during this U.S. election season. Read his Viewpoint.
