A Clue to Softbank's Big Deal in India:
Think Alibaba

 READ FORBES POST

With mega venture deals now hitting India's startup shores, it seems clearer than ever that my premise of a narrowing gap between China and India's tech scene is spot on. It's just taken longer than the five years I predicted in Startup Asia.
It's more like 10 years, if India can keep the momentum going.
Two major deals in late October in India speak to the opportunity:
$210 million by Softbank in the Uber of India, Olacabs
$627 million by Softbank in the eBay, GroupOn of India, Snapdeal

CHINA
Plans by China's smart phone maker Xiaomi to go global highlight a couple of significant trends in tech innovation today and challenges for the brand's success internationally.
Chinese tech companies are expanding overseas, with the U.S. clearly in their sightlines. But they haven't quite figured out the branding issues involved in going outside their home market - Xiaomi included.

SAN FRANCISCO

Silicon Valley Bank has created an Asia Link desk in the Bay Area to serve a wave of US and Asian emerging companies that are conducting business on both sides of the Pacific. Heading up SVB Asia Link are Ming Yeh and Lilly Huang, both who've moved back to the Bay Area from China (a growing relocation trend). Remember it was SVB that started the Sand Hill venture trek to China and India.

   |    Rebecca Recommends . . .  |    Despite being in one of the most touristy of San Francisco locations, Pier 39, Fog City Fish House is clearly worthy of patronage from even discriminating locals. On the Friday evening I visited, the large restaurant was virtually full, and justifiably so. The view of the Marina and Golden Gate Bridge were divine, and the grilled trout, scallops, mussels and crab were fresh, tender and tasty. (Thanks, CLD)                                    |
