Tax Season Becomes Less Taxing
| | |
Did you know that last tax season Beverly Bootstraps prepared 185 returns through our Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) program?
Tax season can be a daunting time for many of our clients. The EITC outreach program provides working low-income individuals and families with free tax preparation. Performed by a certified IRS volunteer, this service helps participants apply for applicable tax credits. Beverly Bootstraps has been able to help clients receive $254,773 in refunds, and $119,347 of that money is a direct result of our EITC program for the 2013 tax season. One client, Rebecca*, who is a single mother with two daughters, lives paycheck to paycheck. With such limited income, she cannot afford to pay a professional to prepare her taxes. Rebecca came to Beverly Bootstraps to participate in our EITC program last spring and, with one of our certified volunteers, she was able to have her taxes done at no cost and qualified for the EITC. Rebecca said that she didn't think she had ever received it in the past and was happy to hear how much she was going to receive as a refund. With these extra resources, she was able to pay for her youngest daughter's daycare, an expense she was unsure she was going to be able to continue to afford. She was also reminded of other Case Management and food assistance services available to her. This program is a collaboration between Beverly Bootstraps and North Shore Community Action Programs and is generously funded by North Shore United Way.
