A Turkey Story
| | |
Did you know Beverly Bootstraps distributed 449 holiday food bags and 437 turkeys to our clients last year?
The holiday season is a time of joy and happiness, but for some it can also be stressful and financially taxing. Ted,* a single father, finds it difficult to support himself and his son, and has been visiting our Food Pantry for the past few years. He has no family in the area and struggles to make ends meet, despite working a full time job.
During the holidays, his dollars are stretched even further and he finds it hard to afford the ingredients needed to make a Thanksgiving dinner for himself and his son. Ted has come to the Beverly Bootstraps Food Pantry for the past few years to get a turkey and a bag of extra Thanksgiving fixings. If he did not have our Food Pantry, Ted said that he would not be able to have a Thanksgiving dinner.
On top of coming in for food, Ted visits Beverly Bootstraps to utilize our other programs, such as Fuel Assistance, Tax Prep (EITC), Adopt-A-Family, Back-to-School Bonanza, and he has received Thrift Shop vouchers in the past. We are glad to be able to help Ted in all the various ways that we do and are happy to make the holidays that much more enjoyable for him and his son.
The impact of your support has enabled Beverly Bootstraps to be able to give people in our community, like Ted and his son, the ability to truly celebrate the spirit of Thanksgiving.

Family Togetherness Night
We've had a very successful start to the year in our after school programs here at Beverly Bootstraps. The kids and tutors are glad to be back, and parents also seem extremely enthusiastic to have their children participating in our clubs.
The first Family Togetherness Night of the year was held on September 24th with record turnout. Our theme, "Homework Skills Bonanza," gave kids a chance to decorate homework boxes filled with supplies that will ensure they have all the right materials to complete their homework when not at Beverly Bootstraps. Parents had a chance to meet with our Education Supervisor to learn some strategies to best support their children academically - whether through helping with homework, building relationships with teachers and guidance counselors, or knowing where to turn for help if needed. The night was also a wonderful opportunity for our new Youth Coordinator to get to know more of the extended families of our kids.
Learning About Worming
After School programs would also like to announce our newest classroom addition - 1,000 Red Wiggler worms! In an effort to build more environmental awareness and reduce the amount of garbage produced by our programs, a composting worm system has been incorporated into our curriculum. Students will have the opportunity to monitor the progress of the worms, and learn about the benefits of composting. We also have hopes that some of our Middle School students will choose some aspect of the worm bin as part of their project for Briscoe Middle School's first science fair to be held after the New Year.

Our Youth and Family Coordinator worked with the ladies of Crossroads Quilters to create unique quilts for each of our After-School students that they would be able to take home with them.
