A Camper Story
| | |
This summer, Beverly Bootstraps was able to send 49 at-risk children to camp for free thanks to our generous donors.
There are many children in Beverly who dream of going to camp over the summer, however the cost of camp prohibits their family from being able to send them. Summer Camp is an enriching experience every child should be able to enjoy. At camp children spend the day being physically active, learning social skills, learn new skills, gain confidence and make new friends. These are all things that these children may not otherwise experience if it were not for Beverly Bootstraps working with our camp partners to make this possible. Christopher and Caleb*, two Beverly brothers whose parents were referred to Beverly Bootstraps by their school nurse were placed at Summer Quest camp on the grounds of Crane Estate in Ipswich. The boys had never been to camp before and were thrilled to attend. For two weeks they were able to swim, work on art projects, play sports, and even do some boating. The camp also provides transportation to and from camp, picking up and dropping them off at Beverly Bootstraps. Their family does not have a car, so this made going to camp much easier on their family. Christopher and Caleb's parents recently called Beverly Bootstraps to express their thanks for being able to send their sons to camp for the first time. Going to camp gave the two brothers a summer they will treasure. They are excited to go back to school and tell their friends about their adventures at camp. This program was generously funded by the Edward S. & Winifred G. Mosley Foundation, Fisher and Fuel Society of Beverly, and the Beverly Female Charitable Society. Our Summer Camp Partners include Camp Half Moon, Girl Scout Camp, Gain @ GUS, GUS, Mitchman, Summer Quest, and Waring Art Works. Beverly Bootstraps is thankful for the generous support of our Back-to-School Bonanza!
The Back-to-School Bonanza has been supplying backpacks filled with school supplies to low-income children in Beverly, since 2001. The goal of this initiative is to help children start the school year off right with the supplies they need to achieve academic success.
Over the past few days, Beverly Bootstraps has been able to give hundreds of children a new backpack. Next week we will distribute the remaining backpacks to the Beverly and Manchester-by-the-Sea school nurses.
We are very grateful to all of the community members who came and donated school supplies to Beverly Bootstraps.
Our business partners this year included Single Source, the Greater Beverly YMCA, Cell Signaling Technology, Electric Insurance Co., CSL Ships, Edward S. & Winifred G. Mosley Foundation, Congregational Church of Topsfield, Second Congregational Church, Paul Russell & Co, Costantino Richards Rizzo LLP, and the Beverly Schools PTO groups.
Beverly Bootstraps Has First HiSET Graduate!
We are very excited that we have had our first student pass the HiSET exam! Phillip worked very hard in our HiSET test prep class and we are very proud of him for such an accomplishment. With this degree, he will be able to pursue a better career or continue his education so that he can better support himself and his family. Congrats Phillip!
*The HiSET exam is the new GED exam that gives a student the equivalent of a high school diploma.

Local Boy Scout Makes Personal Care Packs

Duncan Dietz (right) pictured above with his younger brother holding some of his personal care packs.
|
Duncan Dietz, a Boy Scout from Reading, donated 100 personal care packs to Beverly Bootstraps last month to hand out to our clients when they come into the Food Pantry. For his service project with the Boy Scouts, he decided to raise money to buy a variety of personal care items, like toothpaste, soap, and razors, etc. He then made 300 packs to distribute to three different local charities. 100 of those packs came to Beverly Bootstraps, as well as a donation from the money leftover from his supply fund. We are very thankful for Duncan and that he thought of Beverly Bootstraps for his project.
