Snoopy's & the MDA Shamrock Program shamrocks against mda

We will be taking part again this year with the Shamrocks Against Dystrophy to send local kids to summer MDA camp. Through the generosity of our customers, we have helped to send kids to camp.  We will be selling shamrocks from March 5 - 19th.

The MDA is a volunteer health agency that is the nation's largest non-governmental funder of neuromuscular research, health care services and education. It is seeking treatments and cures for more than 40 neuromuscular diseases.

We have seen first hand in our own family and in our community the power of this great organization.  Click here to learn more about MDA.

New Products Marketed in March
Three of our modern day icons got their start in March:
Coca Cola, Oreos, and Barbie!   coke bottle

Coke was first sold in bottles as a healthful beverage on March 12, 1894 in Columbus, Ga.  The name was based on the 2 key ingredients: cocaine from the coca leaf and caffeine from the kola nut. (K was changed to C for marketing.) In 1903 cocaine was removed from the drink, but "spent" coca leaves are still used today. One plant in New Jersey is authorized by the Federal government to import and process the coca plant, and the extracted cocaine is sold to a pharmaceutical company. The kola nut still is the source of flavor and caffeine in Coke.

On March 6, 1912, the National Biscuit Company (NaBisCo) put the Oreo cookie on sale for the first time.  More than 362 billion have been sold, making it the best selling cookie in the 20th century.  No one is really sure about the origin of the name.

Barbie & Oreo Barbie made her debut on March 9, 1959.  Ruth Handler, who husband co-founded the Mattell Toy Company, convinced her husband that an adult figured doll and her accessories would be a big seller, after seeing such a doll in Germany on a trip.  The new doll was named after her daughter, Barbara.  (Ken, who was introduced later, was named after her son.)

salmon saute

Easy Salmon Saute

We used 4 salmon filets about 6 oz. each.

Sprinkle Old Bay seasoning & a little pepper over the fish and place the fish in a plastic bag with flour.  Shake to coat the filets evenly.

Heat 1 T of olive oil in a pan & brown the fish skin side up for 3-4 min. Turn and cook the other side for 3-4 min.

Remove the fish from the pan.

Add another tablespoon of oil to the pan & cook until tender:

2 T minced onion

2 T chopped celery

2 T drained capers, chopped

Add 1 T red wine vinegar to mixture & cook on high 1 min.

Spoon over salmon filets.

Enjoy! (No fishy taste!)

American Red Cross

The American Red Cross

The American Red Cross responds to over 70,000 disasters a year and is not a government agency.  It depends on the donation of time, blood, and money to carry out its work in this country and across the world.  It provides 24 hour support to members of our military and stands ready to help people prepare and respond to emergencies.
Why do we have Daylight Savings Time?
Spring forward!  By moving the clocks up by one hour, the government has tried to conserve the use of energy in the United States since World War I.  Having extra daylight time after working hours was supposed to encourage families to spend more time together outside, using less energy for lights and appliances.  Many people opposed it, and some studies have shown that there is not the energy savings of earlier times, since many people stay inside and use more air conditioning.
During World War II, from 1942 to 1945, President Roosevelt instituted year-round DST called "War Time". There was no law from 1945 - 1966, so some states had it, while others didn't.

To end the confusion, Congress passed the Uniform Time Act of 1966 which established Daylight Saving Time that began the last Sunday of April and observed until the last Sunday of October. From Jan. 6, 1974 to April 26, 1975, DST was observed under the Emergency Daylight Savings Time Energy Conservation Act of 1973.

Daylight Savings Time was extended by 4 weeks as part of an energy bill signed by President George Bush in 2005. This bill sets DST time from the 2nd Sunday in March until the 1st Sunday in November.
