Bringing in the Year 2013
Aptly named for the Roman two-headed guardian god of the gates, Janus, January is a time to review our past and plan for the future. We take stock of where we are and make resolutions.
Many New Year's traditions and superstitions come from the belief that what occurs on January 1 will set a pattern for the res t of the year. Fireworks are supposed to scare off "bad spirits". Kissing after midnight insures love for the coming year. Avoid breaking things or crying on Jan. 1st. Bring something into the house before taking anything out. Many people eat greens and black-eyed peas to insure prosperity. Pork is the preferred meat to eat since pigs root forward for food, while cows stand still and chickens scratch backward.

Only a Southerner knows how many fish, collard greens, or beans it takes to make up a "mess".

The Presidential Inauguration and Martin Luther King Federal Holiday 2013
January 20 is the official day for the President to be sworn in. However, since it falls on a Sunday, Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts will administer the official oath of office in a private ceremony on that day and will administer a second symbolic oath of office on Monday, the day of the public inaugural activities.
The inauguration coincides with the federal holiday set aside to honor Rev. Martin Luther King,Jr., which is the third Monday in January each year. In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service and charged the Corporation for National and Community Service with leading this effort. The MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service - a "day on, not a day off." Learn more about MLK Day of Service |

National Volunteer Blood Donor Month. Every two seconds, someone in the US needs blood. More than 38,000 blood donations are needed daily. Blood can not be manufactured, and comes only from generous donors.

4 (15 oz.) cans Bush's black beans (drained & rinsed)
1 T chili powder
½ tsp. cumin
½ tsp. oregano
½ tsp. thyme
2 T parsley (or cilantro)
2-3 T chopped ham (optional)
1 cup mild salsa (or med. or hot if you prefer)
Simmer until beans are tender. (30 min.)
Dip out ½ soup mix, cool, place in blender & puree. (You may also use an immersion blender.) Mix it until it thickens & looks creamy. Add this back to the rest of the soup.
