Notes from Kristina

Do You Want More?                                          February 2, 2016

Good morning,

From birth to three years old is the prime time for children to develop early literacy skills. There is so much you can teach your child in regards to talking and communicating before they even go to school.

In class you may have heard your Sprouting Melodies Provider sing, "Do you want more?" paired with sign language. If you look closely, your child may be asking for more without even having to sign or say anything. Non-verbal communication is just as important as verbal communication. During instrument play when the music stops and a child initiates by playing their instrument, or waves her arms, or kicks his legs, they are communicating that they want more. By labeling their actions with sign language and verbal language (e.g. "You want more music") you are promoting their language skills.

Signing with your child can have many benefits, some of which are mentioned here in this FAQ page from Zero To Three. The more you try to understand your child's way of communicating and show them you understand with your responses and verbal/sign language models, the more they will learn to effectively communicate with you and others. In my Sprouting Melodies 3 class, I have seen the progression of the kids' response to "Do you want more?" They went from blank stares, to initiating by playing their drum, to signing "more," to saying "more," to saying "more fast!" It is so exciting to see your children developing so many great skills while making music!

I'll see you in class!
