Notes from Kristina

From Watching To Doing                                           January 19, 2015

Good morning,

Young children and even adults learn by observing. You may notice when your child is introduced to something new in class, at home, or out in the community, they stop and watch. This is because their mirror neurons in their brain are working to process the information they are seeing. These mirror neurons fire when a child watches another person doing something, creating new neuro-pathways as if they were doing the action themselves. Our brain first makes a memory of an action and then performs it. This is the way babies learn to imitate whether it be smiling back at you when you smile at them, or shaking the maraca when they see you shake them. You may experience this when you see someone yawn, and then yawn yourself. That is your mirror neurons at work!

The more you can demonstrate what we are doing in music, both in class and at home, the more your child will learn from you. If you see your child watching, and not doing, just remember that there is a lot going on in their brain as they watch and learn from others.

I'll see you in class!
