Temperament and Routine January 12, 2015
| |
Good morning,
It was so great to see so many familiar faces in Sprouting Melodies last week as well as several new families who had their first Sprouting Melodies experience!
A common theme that I noticed this week (and some of you may have also noticed) was a sense of shyness or reluctance to enter the music room. Some parents mentioned to me that their child had a hard time getting into the room at other activities last week, or their child was "unusually shy today." This is to be expected! Even if your child has been coming to Sprouting Melodies for a while now, a few weeks off for the holidays can throw off their routine. For some children, their temperament is different, and they may just jump right in as if nothing has changed. For others, it may take them a while to warm up. Changes in routine can make them feel uneasy. Another common theme I noticed was once the music started many of the children who were feeling uneasy jumped right into the music. The structure and routine of familiar songs, or songs with strong rhythms, can help bring about that sense of security and safety that your child needs to feel in order to play.
For those of you who are new to Sprouting Melodies, you may have noticed this reserved shyness in your child as well. The routine of the class has not yet been established, and the songs, people, and environment are new to them. That sense of trust and security will develop with time week after week.
So what can you do to help your child when they are feeling uneasy in new or different situations? Use music! Sing these songs at home to help establish that familiarity in a place where they already feel safe. It is a great tool that you can access anywhere. Next time you are coming up the stairs or in the door to class and your child is feeling uneasy, sing the hello song or another favorite to help them transition into a safe and trusted space.
I'll see you in class!
