The Calming Effects Of Music April 14, 2015

Good Morning,
| Click the drum to read more on the Remo website. |
I hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine and fresh air!
You may have seen both Laura and I use the First Sounds Lullaby Ocean Disc instrument in class. The caregivers in my class really noticed the calming effect the drum had on both the kids and themselves. This drum is a product of Remo and was specifically made to emulate the whooshing sound of the womb. Remo created this drum for use in First Sounds: Rhythm, Breath and Lullaby Program, which is part of an international Music Therapy training program for music therapists working in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Many people falsely believe that the womb is a quiet environment. On the contrary, it can be very loud due to the sounds of your blood pumping and your heart beating reverberating off of your bones. It's like when you block your ears and talk or sing, your voice sounds loud in your head.
An article in the New York Times touches on a study led by Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City on the effects of live music on premature infants and their mothers. The study found that the music "helped to slow infants' heartbeats, calm their breathing, improve sucking behaviors important for feeding, aid sleep and promote states of quiet alertness." Watch the video in the link above to see how the First Sounds Lullaby Ocean Disc is used in the NICU.
Reminder- There is no class this week! See you next week in class!
