Everything Is 'No'                                                                     March 10, 2015

Good Morning,

I hope everyone is enjoying these few warmer days we are having! Hopefully some of that snow melts away. Well here we are, halfway through our Sprouting Melodies session. Many families have shared with me their excitement that their child has become more comfortable in class, and is beginning to show their comfort level by exploring, smiling, and sharing laughs with their loved one. In my Sprouting Melodies 2 class, the children are beginning to explore the sound of the instruments, and not just the feel of them in their mouth!

In my Sprouting Melodies 3 class, some children are exploring their independence and control. One thing parents have noticed their children doing is saying "no" to everything even if that's not what they mean. Sometimes it is a playful and funny expression, but sometimes it is defiant. This is GREAT! Saying "no" is a reflection of a child's ability to control things. This is a part of their natural development. The word "no" can test you especially when you are trying to get your child's coat on to get out the door on time, but that act of defiance is your child realizing that they are separate from you, and have the ability to control aspects of their world. This drive for control can test your patience, but you can help support this part of your child's development by finding creative ways to give them control in a positive way. MUSIC is the perfect opportunity to do this.  You may notice your Sprouting Melodies Provider giving the children a choice of how they want to play, or how to move their bodies. You can do this at home using music or other things they enjoy.

Have a great day, and I'll see you in class!
