Spring fever at the McCormack!
Message from Dean Ira A. Jackson
Whew! We've just finished a whirlwind month here at the McCormack Graduate School. We hosted several major events with thought-provoking guests discussing exciting local and global topics and careers that matter. In early April, we cosponsored an innovative conference on the use of technology in government, a two-day symposium on global religious divides honoring 100-year old alum Ben Slomoff (Conflict Resolution '97), and held a fundraiser honoring the life and legacy of a political leader and longtime friend of our Women in Politics program which drew three governors to join us.

The statistics are alarming.

Only 32% of Boston third-grade students are reading at the proficiency level. Nationwide, 1.2 million students drop out each year; that's 1 every 26 seconds.

Today, an entering 9th grader in a Boston Public Schools district high school has only a 12% chance of graduating from college within 7 years of high school graduation. Across the country, only 34% of the poorest children enroll in college and only 11% graduate.

UMass Boston Event Tackles Global Religious Conflict

Academics, practitioners, and local and national government representatives from near and far assembled at UMass Boston's McCormack Graduate School for a two-day symposium on April 7-8 on "Bridging Global Religious Divides."

In celebration of the 100th birthday of Benjamin Slomoff (Conflict Resolution '97), the Department of Conflict Resolution, Human Security, and Global Governance and the Center for Peace, Democracy, and Development expanded their annual Sylvia and Benjamin Slomoff Lecture on Conflict Resolution into a two-day symposium to honor their distinguished benefactor who traveled from California to be in attendance.
