Message from Dean Ira A. Jackson
Dear Friends and Colleagues,

With justice for all.

In July, many of us celebrated Independence Day with barbecues and fireworks. Yet, it is also a time to reflect on our values and blessings.

Guided by a strong belief that hard work and integrity would be rewarded, our school's namesake, John W. McCormack, pursued his own American Dream, becoming one of the most influential and powerful figures in U.S. political history. He fought for justice on many fronts: aid for dependent children, civil rights, health care for the elderly, rent subsidies for low-income families, immigrant rights, unemployment insurance, voting rights, and many other pieces of the most progressive legislation of the last century. He also championed justice outside our borders, promoting foreign economic aid and the establishment of NATO.

Although most faculty and students are out of class for the summer, I have a pop quiz for you. I invite you to take this fun trivia test about John W. McCormack's life and legacy. I'm sure you will notice the correlation between his political legacy and our academic mission at the graduate school that proudly bears his name.

On issues ranging from global warming to pension reform, from cutting edge work on aging to peacemaking, McCormack faculty, students, and alumni are on the front lines. They are engaging in important work that matters, worthy of a school named for one of the principal architects of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid--the underpinnings of our nation's whole independence and the example we prize and work every day to strengthen.

I hope you have a restful summer, but I urge you to stay in touch with us by sharing your success stories, visiting our website from time to time, or talking to prospective students about the dynamic graduate programs and cutting-edge research that are happening at the John W. McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies.

To mark the fifth observance of World Oceans Day, the University of Massachusetts Boston's Collaborative Institute for Oceans, Climate, and Security (CIOCS) has released a white paper on the pervasive effects of global climate change on the world's oceans, the multiple potential impacts on human and national security, and the recommendations for priority actions that arose from last May's Global Conference on Oceans, Climate, and Security (GC '12).

In the wee hours of September 4, 2010, disaster struck Christchurch, New Zealand. Esther Newman's husband woke her, saying "this is the big one." The large-scale earthquake that scientists had long predicted in the region was in progress--an earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter Scale.

These are the opening words of the latest post on PaxBlog, which serves as both the voice of the Center for Peace, Democracy, and Development and an opportunity for University of Massachusetts Boston graduate students to be part of a global conversation.
