5 Things to do in:

   Seville, Spain

Visit the Plaza de Espaa

Plaza de Espaa dates back to 1929, built for the Spanish-American Exhibition. Sitting on the edge of the Parque de Maria Luisa, the Plaza is a massive semi-circle, showcasing a marvelous example of southern Spain's architecture. Spend a sunny afternoon walking around the Plaza; after that, wander around the Parque de Maria Luisa. Go for a run along the numerous pathways or bring a blanket and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Get a panoramic view of the city at sunset

Formally known as Metropol Parasol, this giant mushroom-like structure is located in the old quarter of Seville and is arguably the largest wooden structure in the world. Head there a little before sunset and enjoy one of the best panoramic views of the city for less than 2 euros--a pretty unbeatable price!

Don't skimp on the tapas

Tapas are a staple in Spain and Seville offers some of the best tapas bars and restaurants. Go with a group of friends and sample the many relatively inexpensive dishes they have to offer. For some of the best food, try Los Coloniales, located in the city center. The line is definitely worth the wait--don't miss the pollo con salsa de almendra, papas bravas, and various types of croquetas.

Spend a morning at the Alcazar

The Alcazar of Seville is one of the most historical sites in the city. Located next to the cathedral, it became a royal residence in 1248 and displays the unique combination of Spanish Christian and Moorish architecture. Avoid the crowds by arriving early and spend the morning walking through the grounds. You won't want to miss the numerous fountains or the labyrinth in the gardens. Bring your student ID and enter at a reduced price!

Immerse yourself in the culture

Seville is the home of flamenco dancing. If you are there during the spring, Fera de Abril provides one of the best displays of Sevillan culture through dancing, good food, and much more. Walk around the fairground, which is a small city dedicated just to Fera, and explore the hundreds of tents full of Sevillans in traditional flamenco dress celebrating their heritage.

Aaron
Volunteer in Tanzania

Aaron is a Physics and Math High School Teacher who went to the University of Minnesota. He chose to participate in a Teaching volunteer program in Tanzania with World Endeavors.

In Tanzania, Aaron volunteered at a children's center, which was both an orphanage and a primary school. He was able to jump right in and teach about 3 math or science periods a day. Aaron was able to spend time with the kids--playing soccer, reading books, and visiting the orphanage on the weekends. Living with other volunteers, Aaron was also able to meet people from around the world and learn more about the Tanzanian culture from their "house moms."

Aaron plans on going back to Arusha, Tanzania at least one more time, as "the people I met in Tanzania hold a special place in my heart and I am eager to say hello to them again."

Explore the area around you: Go on a day excursion on one of your days off!

When you're living abroad, a day trip can be an exciting way to visit the area surrounding you and explore as much as possible without breaking the bank. If you have some free time, go on a weekend or on a day off and see another slice of your new country while you're there!

From London, England: Brighton
Brighton is a charming town on the coast of England, less than 50 miles south from London. Hop on a train and spend the day walking on the pebbled beach, checking out the seaside arcade attractions, and stopping by the numerous pubs and shops. A nice break from the bustling city life of London without straying too far away.

From Bangkok, Thailand: Ayutthaya
Ayutthaya is an ancient city full of magnificent architecture and a rich history, a little over 50 miles outside of Bangkok. Take a bus, train, or car there and explore the ruins that designated the city as a prosperous trade hub in the 17th century. Don't miss the three palaces and numerous museums the city has to offer!

From Sydney, Australia: Manly Beach
The motto of Manly Beach is "seven miles from Sydney, a thousand miles from care." Manly is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and boasts spectacular beaches, as well as shops and restaurants. Take a short ferry ride from Sydney to the beach and don't forget to bring your camera! The ferry offers some of the best views of the Sydney Harbor and the Opera House that you can find.

From Quito, Ecuador: Otavalo
Otavalo is a fairly small town with only 50,000 residents situated about 2 hours outside of Quito. However, it has quite a bit to offer for a relatively inexpensive price. Spend Saturday morning at the town market wandering around the intricate and beautiful handmade products, then take a short taxi ride to Peguche Waterfall--learn about its history and hike around the paths surrounding it.

From Florence, Italy: Lucca
While many towns and sites are easily accessible from Florence, Lucca provides a quieter option to see a beautiful smaller town with a rich history and vibrant culture. Lucca is known for having some of the best food in Tuscany while also having smaller crowds. Being only about an hour away from Florence by train, it's worth the trip!

Insider's Tip: World Endeavors in-country coordinators are excellent resources for advice on the best places to visit and the best ways to get there; feel free to ask them for advice and tap into their local knowledge.

Featured WE Staff Member:
Kristen Bernsteen

Outreach Intern

Outreach Assistant Kristen Bernsteen was raised in Green Bay, WI.  She currently attends the University of St. Thomas and will graduate this spring with a BA in International Business and Spanish.

Kristen studied abroad last spring in Seville, Spain after studying Spanish throughout high school and college. She lived with a host family and took all her classes in Spanish in order to really challenge her speaking abilities and make the most of her short amount of time there. Having never been out of the country prior to her semester abroad, Kristen wanted to see as much as possible while still fully immersing herself in the Spanish culture. Throughout her semester abroad, Kristen was able to travel to London, Ireland, Paris, Budapest, Prague, Morocco, and Rome, to name a few.

Now that she's back home, she has been loving working at World Endeavors, as studying abroad was one of the best experiences of her life and she is excited to be able to help other people with their experiences. After graduation, Kristen hopes to travel somewhere new, either within the U.S. or out of the country and continue to use her Spanish-speaking abilities and eventually visit as many countries as possible.
