5 Things to do in:
Arusha, Tanzania
Climb Mehru over 'jaro.
Mount Mehru is still Africa's 5th largest mountain, but it provides a good alternative to those not ready to tackle the larger Mount Kilimanjaro. In just two days, travelers can reach the summit, which provides spectacular views of the landscape. It's also a little less touristy than the popular Kilimanjaro for those looking to escape the crowds.
Mingle at Via Via.
Located in the gardens behind the Natural History Museum, the Via Via café is a hot spot for expats and locals to enjoy music, drinks, and dancing.
Listen in on history.
To experience history firsthand, travel to the center of town to watch the hearings of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, which have been in progress since 1994. Headphones are available to translate everything into different languages.
People watch at the cinema.
Head to the cinema for the Western films, or, if you're feeling more anthropological, for opportunities to observe the lifestyle of Arusha's wealthier class.
Venture into the villages.
For a different kind of experience, travel outside of the center of town to observe the way of life of the Masai and Meru ethnic groups. Though some feel strange about touring people's daily lives, the excursions are usually led by locals and the Masai and Meru take great pride in their culture and customs.

Testimonials
"From a brief two month period I gained professional, working abroad, and cultural immersion skills. I also gained lifelong friendships and a deeper embrace for life, as the Brazilians taught me."
Abalu, Intern in Brazil
"At first I was nervous how culturally immersive this program is, but at the end of it all, I am really really happy how this program forces you to become a part of the culture and really forces you to step out of your comfort zone. It makes your whole experience so much more rewarding and you learn so much more about yourself."
Sydney, Volunteer in India
"World Endeavors took care of all the details so I didn't have to worry. Having an in-country WE employee was also really helpful for getting settled in and communicating with my apartment managers in the beginning."
Julie, Study Abroad in Thailand

Songkran: Thailand's Wet and Wonderful Spring Festival
If you're ever in Thailand between April 13th and 16th, expect to get wet.
As part of the Songkran festival celebrating the traditional New Year's Day, people roam the streets with buckets and water guns, ready to drench friends, neighbors, and passersby alike.
Luckily for the Thai people, April falls during the hottest season, so all of the splashing can be a nice way to cool off.
Traditionally, however, the water served as a symbol for washing the bad of the year away. People would collect the blessed water that had been poured over the Buddha statues, and then they would pour it over the shoulder of an elder to give them good fortune. Still today, some treat Songkran as an opportunity to pay respect to their elders, and those that celebrate it as a Buddhist festival visit Buddhist monasteries to pray and give gifts of food to the monks.
The term "Songkran," Sanskrit for 'a move or change,' in this case refers to the sun's entry into the sign of Aries. So even though it is a New Year's celebration, it is also a celebration of the vernal equinox similar to the Indian Holi Festival or the Chinese Ching Ming. And for travelers, Songkran can be a good reason to visit Thailand in April and a unique chance to immerse oneself in the silly and serious traditions of another culture.

Featured WE Staff Member:
Halen Bower Enrollment Assistant

Halen Bower grew up in the small town of Brainerd, Minnesota. Inspired by the great relationship her mom's family had with their Japanese exchange student growing up, she seized the chance to participate in an exchange program to Germany in high school. Her wonderful host family took her on trips all around Germany, to Paris, and to Italy, and she's had the travel bug ever since.
From academic studies to hobbies, Halen has followed her interest in other cultures. She earned a BA in International Relations from Augsburg College in Minneapolis, and she completed yoga teacher training with Frog Lotus International in Guatemala and Radiant Child Yoga in Boston. Most recently, she completed massage training from San Francisco School of Massage and Bodywork. In her free time, Halen also enjoys volleyball, yoga, rock climbing, salsa dancing, hiking, playing ukulele, and photography.
Halen's adventures have taken her all over the world--from England, to Panama, to Thailand--but one of the most incredible experiences she's had abroad was working for a skydiving company in New Zealand.
Though she's back in the US for the moment, Halen is enjoying her time helping others go abroad. "Working for World Endeavors I feel like I'm finally able to give back to others who are going abroad--travel is such an exciting and life-changing opportunity and I'm thrilled to be able to help others have those experiences!" she said.
