5 Things to do in:
Valencia, Spain
Take in the Old Town. Whether you're interested in wandering the labyrinth of streets and alleys or resting at an outdoor cafe to admire the architecture, you'll want to spend some time seeing the Old Town. If you get a chance, try some horchata, a sweet, refreshing drink that's a specialty of the city.
Go on a quest for the Holy Grail. Founded on the site of a mosque in the 13th century, the Valencia Cathedral showcases a blend of architectural styles and an iconic tower that rises above the city. Perhaps most famously, the cathedral claims to have the Holy Grail. Experts even say it might be the real deal.
Explore the city within the city. Along the dried up bed of the Turia River, you can explore The City of the Arts and Sciences--a unique complex devoted to science and culture. Within its stunning, futuristic buildings you'll find an IMAX Cinema, an interactive science museum, and Europe's largest aquarium.
Buy Spanish ham at the Mercado Central. To see Valencia like a local, visit the Mercado Central. Although it is one of the oldest food markets in Europe, it's still where Valencians gather to buy their meats, cheeses, and fresh produce. Make sure to admire the mosaics as you shop and sample.
Marvel at the architecture of La Lonja. Stop by La Lonja silk exchange, a UNESCO World Heritage site and great example of the late Valencian Gothic style of architecture. Its grand hall has spiraling columns and detailed carvings that display the wealth and power of a former center of commerce, and its exterior is home to a few stone gargoyles.

You Had Me at 'Hola': Making Language Learning Fun
It may be cold and snowy outside, but the winter months can be the perfect time to start a new project. As you dream of going abroad, why not take some time to learn a little bit of the language? Studying a language doesn't always mean hours of listening to CD sets or poring over a dictionary. Try out these strategies to make learning easy and fun:
Change the language settings of your favorite movie. Pick up new phrases, and rewind to learn your favorites lines. For an extra challenge, try watching some foreign films too.
Subscribe to a podcast. There are tons of language learning podcasts to choose from, and many of them are free. The lessons are short and the hosts strive to keep learning light and conversational.
Read like a kid again. Visit the local library to check out some children's books. Or if you're a more advanced learner, see if you can tackle favorites like Harry Potter and Twilight.
Label your space. Write down words for everyday objects on notes and tape them around the house. You'll be a pro at words like 'blender' and 'shower' in no time!
Let us help. If you decide to go abroad with World Endeavors, we'll send you an email with a detailed list of resources specific to your program. There are so many options out there, and we'll help direct you to the best.
Whether you're an aspiring conversationalist or just looking to pick up some key words, these tips can give you a start. And when you finally do study, intern, or volunteer abroad, you'll have a great new way to connect with people.

Featured WE Staff Member:
Nicholas Galli Outreach Intern
Nick Galli is originally from Elk River, Minnesota, a small town northwest of the metro. Growing up, he traveled abroad frequently with his family, who inspired him to explore as much as he could. When he was 16, he spent an academic year living with two host families in Cadiz, Spain.
After high school Nick attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He studied Spanish, Geography, and GIS, focusing especially on the relationship between linguistics and politics. At this time he also decided to return to Spain to spend a year abroad in Granada.
Though Nick is fond of the land of flamenco and paella, he's also been to his fair share of other locations. He spent a winter break volunteering on a kibbutz in southern Israel, which sparked an interest in sustainable agriculture and social justice. And he's been to a whole range of countries including France, Italy, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Jordan, Morocco, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Jamaica.
After spending time with his awesome coworkers at World Endeavors, Nick ducks out to teach Spanish to elementary school students in the afternoons, and he hopes he will be able to teach abroad in Spain next year.
