5 Things to do in:
Florence, Italy
1. Uffizi Art Gallery If you love art or at least have an appreciation for it, this is one of the most important museums for Renaissance art. Located in a building that was constructed in the 1500s, over 100,000 paintings, antiques and sculptures are on display. It can be found just off of the Piazza della Signoria and is in a horse shoe shape. Originally, only a few rooms on the third floor were reserved for precious artwork and over time, the Medici family built on the collection of masterpieces. The Uffizi (offices) were expanded in 2007 and in 2011 more European artists work was put on display.
2. Piazza Della Signoria Time to relax, have a coffee and some gelato! This is one of the main squares in Florence with lots of open-air restaurants, shops and gelato shops. Piazza della Signoria has been the political center of Florence and is the perfect place to relax during your day of touring. It is also conveniently located near the Uffizi Art Gallery, the Duomo and many other museums. The Via dei Calzaiuoli is one of the main shopping streets and the leather markets are also worth a visit.
3. Duomo Square and Giotto's Bell Tower Designed by Arnolfo di Cambio and later by Filippo Brunelleschi, the Duomo or cathedral in Florence is colorful on the exterior with pink, green and white marble tiles and an ornate landmark that is a must on your "to see" list. It took two centuries to complete construction, with the famous dome added last. Opposite the dome, on the other side of the cathedral, is Giotto's Campanile (bell tower). It's 280 feet tall and well worth a climb to see a spectacular view of Florence.
4. Ponte Vecchio (old bridge) This is the oldest of the six bridges in Florence with stone pillars that most likely date back to the Roman period, although the construction was modified since then due to flooding and widening of the bridge. Houses were built along the bridge in the 14th century and initially used for workshops. Today, they are used as shops to sell jewelry and souvenirs to tourists and some of the houses extend over the bridge and are supported by wood to keep it from falling into the river.
5. View from Piazzale Michelangelo and Palazzo Pitti/Boboli Gardens On the opposite side of the river from the Duomo, you can start by getting a postcard-worthy picture of you and Florence at the Piazzale Michelangelo. Then work your way over to the Palazzo Pitti and Boboli Gardens. This palace used to be intended for the Pitti family and was originally designed by Filippo Brunelleschi and built onto by other architects through the centuries. Today, it contains some of the most important museums in Florence: Silver Museum, Gallery of Modern Art, Paletine Gallery and many more. The Boboli Gardens extend behind the Pitti Palace and were implemented in the 16th century and is now the largest Italian style green landscape with an amphitheater and many statues and fountains.

Kaitlin, Intern in Australia
Kaitlin is from North Carolina, where she studied Corporate Communications and Business Marketing at university. She participated in a Marketing Internship with World Endeavors in Sydney, Australia.
"Besides for the fact that Australia has so much to offer that I have yet to experience, I am happy with my time spent in Australia. Near the end of my internship Australia stopped being another country and started to feel like home. I am thrilled I took this opportunity and I learned so much from my internship and myself while participating in this experience. I grew as a person while in Sydney and my experience here gave me the confidence I needed to continue with my career. By participating in this internship I know that I can make me living working the marketing field. I wouldn't trade my time here in Sydney for anything."

Why stay with a host family?
Many short-term travelers abroad stay in hotels or resorts and miss out on the chance to immerse themselves in the culture of the country they are visiting. For those who wish to go beyond the typical tourist experience, a World Endeavors intern, study or volunteer program that offers a home stay with a local family offers incredible opportunities for cultural immersion. These are some reasons why:
1. Eat great local food! Staying with a local family gives you the chance to taste home-made local cuisine, and perhaps even learn how to cook some of it yourself.
2. Get the inside scoop on interesting places to visit in the area that aren't in the tourist guidebooks.
3. Improve your language skills. There is no better way to learn a language than by practicing it with your new family at the dinner table!
4. Have a built-in support network. Your host family can explain how things work and help you figure out things like how to catch the bus or set up your cell phone.
5. Enjoy the feeling of having a home away from home in a foreign country.
6. Stay in touch with your host family after you leave. Now you have a family to visit and a place to stay next time you go back to visit!
Have questions about staying with a host family? Contact World Endeavors and talk to one of our program advisors, or ask to be put in touch with one of our alumni advisors to hear all about their experiences!

Start applying for summer programs!
It's not too early to start applying for summer programs.
Summer is one of the most convenient times to intern, study, or volunteer abroad. For students with busy schedules during the school year, the summer break is a fantastic opportunity to get some extra credits within their field of study or explore other subjects. A summer internship helps students get valuable work experience without taking time away from their studies, and our summer volunteering programs can fit into any schedule and are a great way to contribute time to helping others while gaining international experience.
Many of World Endeavors' academic programs offer summer-term classes. Our intern and volunteer programs have flexible start dates and durations, so even if you have plans or obligations for part of the summer, you can still find the program that fits into your schedule.

Featured WE Staff Member:
Lauren Asheim Project Coordinator
Lauren is originally from Denver, Colorado. She studied dance, music and theater, but also enjoys religious studies, languages (specifically Norwegian, German and French) and literature classes. Lauren has many interests such as teaching, practicing kundalini yoga and meditation. She loves to read and knit, but also be in the outdoors, go for hikes and listen to any type of music.
She studied and taught English in Tanzania in 2001. Lauren mentions that it was particularly interesting to go abroad at this time because of 9/11, but she stayed regardless and "loved deepening my connection with my community there."
"I chose to go abroad to expand my world view. I wanted to be immersed in a culture that was completely different from my own. I learned a lot about myself and about the ways in which we are all similar and connected."
Lauren has been to England, France, Mexico, Tanzania, Canada and various places around the USA. One of her favorite memories from her experiences abroad was of the friends that she made in Tanzania. "One lady who worked at a restaurant I often ate at, invited me to her home. She took the whole day to teach me how to cook Tanzanian food and then we shared the meal with her family."
She states that being part of a team that helps others to travel and expand their world is awesome. She states that "we have a wonderful staff at World Endeavors and we always seem to make the day fun!"
