| US Airways and American Airlines Merger Confirmed |
|
US Airways Group Inc. and American Airlines parent AMR Corp. confirmed on Feb. 14 their $11 billion merger deal. The announcement comes after private approvals of the merger by US Airways' and American's boards of directors on Feb. 13. The merger is the latest in the trend of airline industry consolidation that could put upward pressures on airline fares. It also creates uncertainty for the future of the US Airways hub at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, where it is the top carrier. The airline will be based at American's home in Fort Worth, Texas and not Tempe, where US Airways is based. US Airways has approximately 9,000 employees in Arizona and more than 32,000 company-wide. The statement from the merged airline Thursday morning said it will have a "significant corporate and operational presence in Phoenix." (BizJournals.com/Phoenix, Feb. 14) |
