Mt. Bethel UMC

 June 15, 2014

Paul, in his first letter to the church at Corinth, deals with the power and essence of Love in chapter 13.  Paul tells us that no matter what you are gifted in doing, no matter how outgoing you are with your faith, and no matter what blessings you have received, it does not matter if love is not at the center.

As we celebrate this Father's Day, we have to pause and acknowledge that the power of fatherhood is rooted in the ability to love.  Often, fathers provide a love that is stern, yet embracing, strong, yet gentle, tough but caring.  The call of fatherhood is not to be taken lightly.  Fathers are to be the "stabilizing bar" for the family.  The only way that a father can be the stability needed for a strong family is for that father to be rooted and anchored in a faith that is not wavering.

Thank God for fathers who, more than self, love God and their families. Thank God for fathers who can be seen at the altar praying.  Thank God for fathers whose love is cherished by their families.  Whether your father is unknown or known, living here on earth, or living in the Father's house, celebrate the fact that, more than our earthly father, our Heavenly Father loves us so much that we have no choice but to celebrate this day and always.

Josiah Gilbert Holland wrote a poem entitled "Give Us Men."  I have replaced the word "men" with the word "father."  Here is the first verse:

Give us Fathers!
Fathers-from every rank,
Fresh and free and frank;
Fathers of thought and reading,
Fathers of light and leading,
Fathers of loyal breeding,
The nation's welfare speeding;
Fathers of faith and not of fiction,
Fathers of lofty aim in action;
Give us Fathers - I say again,
Give us Fathers!

Happy Father's Day!

Typically our summer offerings do not meet our operating expenses, and level giving would help offset this shortfall. Thank you for your consideration!
