EASTER IS OVER?

I think most of us are "big day" kind of people, that is, our culture loves to celebrate a big day in a really big way... the 4th of July at the lake, New Year's Eve with a crowd downtown somewhere, anniversaries with a trip to an exotic location. To be honest, I was kind of glad when my kids got a little older because I was running out of themes for

birthday parties. I was surprised a couple of years ago when I was in Kenya with a good friend, and we celebrated his birthday with a cake and the "Happy Birthday" song, and he exclaimed, "this is the biggest birthday celebration I have ever had," and he was 50 years old.

I have mixed feelings about all of these celebrations. On one hand, it seems like sometimes we overdo it a bit, but on the other hand, celebrating someone's special occasion in a big way can be a real blessing and encouragement to someone you love. So I will leave to you to figure out just the right level of celebration. What I would like you to think about for a minute is what happens after the celebration. For Christians, Easter is our biggest celebration and rightfully so. It still amazes me that God would walk among us and give his life up for us so that we might have a deep and eternal relationship with him. Now that is something to celebrate. However, if we are not careful, without ever meaning to, we can focus more on the celebration and not the incredible life that the celebration invites us to walk into. As I was praying this week, my heart was full as I reflected on this past Sunday's worship and how God was lifted high and the joy and Spirit of God I felt in the room. I also felt a little drained from all the Holy Week activities and a little down that the big celebration was over. As I shared my heart with God, He reminded me that as much as He also loves a good celebration that His greatest joy is those who walk with Him faithfully daily and the love that His faithful followers share with others so that more and more might be invited to the party.

As we come off of Holy Week and all the Easter Celebrations, it is a great time to reclaim what Easter is all about, a resurrected life. A life that daily offers a relationship with the living God. For the first century Christians, Easter was not the end of the celebration, instead it was just the beginning of all that God was about to do in their lives and through their lives that would change the world. If we really want to celebrate Easter, the best thing we can do is to do the same thing the first disciples did. We need to spend time with our risen Lord, ask Him to fill us with Spirit, and go out in His name to share His great love. Now that is an Easter Celebration! I am thankful I have seen so many of you already joining in that celebration, and I pray God will do even greater things in us and through us in the year to come.
