Why Church?

When does one discover one's calling? When do we decide what to do with our lives? Recently, I read that the age of 30 is often the critical age of deciding one's vocation. For example, Joseph was 30 years old when he entered the service of the Pharaoh, King of Egypt (Genesis 41:46). Jesus was 30 years old when the voice from heaven said, "Thou art my beloved Son."

The list of people who, at the age of 30, realized what their life's calling would be is pretty impressive. Not only Jesus, but John the Baptist. Paul was 30 when his life was turned around on the Damascus road; St. Augustine was 31 when he left his mistress to begin a religious quest, and 33 when he was Baptized. Martin Luther experienced God's grace when he was 30 and 33 when he began the Protestant Reformation. John Wesley was 32 when he came to Georgia and 34 when he had his Aldersgate experience. Dr. Albert Schweitzer decided to leave his professorship to become a missionary-physician at the age of 30.

These examples ought to comfort those younger than 30 and confused about what to do with their lives. It should give insight to those of us who are older to know that a sense of purpose in life may come after one has chosen a "job."

Christianity is a mission-giving force. The people listed above all formed their vocations around their 30th birthday; however, their purpose or "mission" in life was discovered as children, when they were taught the principles of their faith. Their lives were being directed for God as they were being taught daily through the examples of their parents.

Mt. Bethel's ministries, programs, and missions will help your family, and especially your children, grow stronger spiritually. But parents and grandparents, it doesn't work unless you participate regularly! Church is the finest place for a life to make up its mind.
