What's It Worth?

A young mother went shopping one morning only to encounter her son on the town streets. Angry that her son had skipped school, she demanded he tell her why he wasn't in class. She listened patiently to his explanation and then replied, "I'm not accusing you of telling a lie

. . . but I have never heard of a school that gives time off for good behavior!"

At the opposite end of the spectrum was the dentist who said to his patient, hypodermic needle in hand, "You might feel a little sting. On the other hand, it might feel as though you've just been kicked in the mouth by a mule!"

As much as we might say we always want to be told the truth, sometimes the truth hurts. But it never hurts as much as being told a lie.

Telling the truth includes being honest about ourselves - about our own nature, our sins and our faults. It means "confessing" that we aren't perfect and that we don't always do what is right before God or in relationship to others. When we lie to ourselves, it only separates us further from God.

The Book of James is known as sermons on truth. The author of James is very plain spoken. The language James uses is so simple, honest and direct that comment and explanation seem superfluous. The truth James tells is not up for debate. Christians know what James says to be the truth regarding Godly living. But do we Christians live those truths? "What's It Worth to You" when you read these truths from James, "Whenever you face trials of any kind, consider it nothing but joy"???

I look forward to exploring the truths explained by James, as we consider together the series, "What's It Worth . . . To You?"

Bethel student through daily prayer, please contact kibbie.jones@mtbethel.org
