 DARE TO BE GODLY FAMILIES

During the month of July, we have been Double-Dog daring the Mt. Bethel family to go beyond the usual and reach farther and trust more in their faith journey.  We have also been emphasizing the church family by combining all the services into the Sanctuary for the month of July.  When I think of family, I am always reminded of my family and the children and grandchildren.  Many of you are like Joyce and me; we have a second chance with our grandchildren to correct those things we did not do right in rearing our own children.  With this idea, I want to share some things that are on my heart about our children.

The other day I was reading something Horticulturist Luther Burbank warned years ago:  "If we had paid no more attention to our plants than we have to our children, we would now be living in a jungle of weeds."   Unfortunately it appears that he was right because there are many homes in our world today that resemble jungles instead of gardens.  To bring up a child in this world is a tremendous responsibility.  There is no bigger job than to be a dedicated and faithful parent.

And yet, in spite of the tremendous responsibility, many parents today leave the instruction of their children to chance.  We allow the culture and the world to form their minds and personalities rather than loving parents.  We allow the church, the schools, the coaches, and babysitter to do most of our job as parents.  This must not be.  We involve our children in everything that comes along and usually keep them so busy they can't even enjoy being children because we want them to be like everyone else.  We must spend time with them and teach them the good and the best.

A child is like a blank computer memory chip.  What they are taught is what is downloaded on that memory chip.  The world is going to form them like the masses, and the world believes that a child is never too young to learn.  Yet we often say they are too young to understand the things of God.  We, as parents and grandparents, have the ability and responsibility to begin early filling their minds with godly things and godly habits.  This takes time, love, effort, and dedication.  It is a full-time job.

God has ordained the family structure as we know it, and one of its primary purposes is for the training of children.  In the book of Proverbs, Solomon gives us wise advice on children rearing.  He said, "Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it."  You must teach them.  You cannot leave the job to the school, the church or the babysitter.  It is your responsibility as a parent.

The week of the Family Revival Bible School, Jody reminded us that who we follow has a tremendous effect on those who follow us.  I just want to "Double-Dog Dare You" to follow Jesus with every ounce of your energy and will.  If you will model the life of Jesus before your children then they will also model Him in their lives.  Rearing children is a tough job, but it is a glorious job with unbelievable rewards!   This Sunday we will look at Friends of the Family that will help us to make our families part of the Family of God.  See you in church on Sunday!
