"WHERE IS JESUS TODAY?"

I have been a pastor for forty-five years and in that time the most asked question has been, "Where is Jesus in all of this?" This has been asked a lot lately due to the school shootings where innocent children have lost their lives and the tornados in Oklahoma where there was the devastation of homes and property and loss of lives. This is also a question that has been asked in our church because of the suffering of some of our saints and the hardships of those who seem to be doing the will of the Lord. The answer is simple but yet very complex.

To begin with, our world is full of the images of Jesus. You can see Him on television, movies, T-shirts, magazines, web sites, blogs, books, artwork, and tattoos. It seems that the world is curious about Jesus yet the curiosity doesn't seem to have helped any understanding of Him. My experience is that people know about Jesus but know very little of the essence of who He is or what He taught. The one thing that is generally agreed upon is that Jesus is powerless to do anything but be nice and gentle, but yet a lot of people are offended by His very name. Simply, people have a real problem with the real Jesus and His teachings.

Back to the question of "Where is Jesus in all of this?" I want to propose to you that Jesus is alive and well today and is working in His creation. Jesus humbly entered into history as a man to indentify with us. Throughout His life on earth, He repeatedly said that following His death, burial, and resurrection, He would ascend back into heaven from which He had come. He is now at the right hand of the Father.

Since Jesus is in heaven at the right hand of the Father, I need a personal relationship with Jesus. Simply knowing about Him is not enough. Being in relationship with Him, we then have the privilege of calling upon Him for help to get us through the times in our lives where we are in need of comfort, courage, and wisdom to meet the devastating tragedies.

Jesus is also involved in the world in the lives of those who allow Him to have control. This means that we should be a force against those things that cause devastation of families. I am aware that we cannot control the weather but we can speak out against those things that wreck families and the lives of individuals like drugs, alcohol, abortion, poverty, and pornography. As the Church of Jesus Christ we should win souls for Him with a passion. It also means that, as His disciples, we should be assured of our heavenly home.

This world is not the end. It is just the beginning of a wonderful home forever with our heavenly Father. But the most important thing we should remember about Jesus is that He was the ransom for our sins before God, and all who believe that truth will be saved. Jesus loves us all and wants to see no one suffer loss of property or loved ones, but tragedy is the reality of living in a fallen world. I DARE YOU to choose to follow Him today; and whatever happens, you will not be alone!
