Mt. Bethel UMC

April 28, 3013

We welcome John Hunter to the 9:30 & 11:00 Sanctuary services this week. John's roots as a potter extend to his childhood when he would massage the tired feet and back of his osteopathic father in the evenings. "This had a big influence on me. When you are working with your hands, there are such similarities between clay and flesh," notes the American, who has been living and working in Namibia for 11 years and has won a number of national pottery awards in the southern African country.

John's pottery is defined by its functionality and simplicity, but also by its beauty. He uses clean, Sumi-e Japanese-style brushwork for his square vases, sushi platters, plates and teapots; the glazes are gorgeous deep cobalt blues, pinks and earthy browns, and are given fabulous texture and variety by his use, primarily, of a wood-fired kiln, rather than the more uniform effect created by an electric kiln.

Hunter and his wife Suzanne work as missionaries for Youth with a Mission (YWAM), based on a smallholding outside the capital, Windhoek, where John has his studio. He helps train teachers from Namibia and other parts of the world, in Christian-based education on the YWAM plot. Through the mission, they also helped in 2005 to establish a school in the capital's township, Katutura. Called the Community Hope School, YWAM aims to assist the Namibian government in educating the country's poorest children, he says.

"We feel we need to be more than just a school to these children; more like a social welfare organization. We take the children to the clinic, doctor or the dentist if they need treatment. At school, they also receive breakfast, snacks and a main meal," says Hunter. The school has 56 pupils up to Grade 4.

After graduating from school in Beverly Hills, where he grew up, John learned the basics of pottery and decided to do a ceramics course at Santa Monica College. In the 1970s, he worked at the famous Pot Shop in Venice Beach, Los Angeles, alongside potter Ned Sloane and artist-printer Joe Funk. The flower-power culture of the hippies did not escape Hunter. When he and Suzanne met, they were both practicing Hindus and "into yoga". "We were on a spiritual search and in 1972 we set off for India to find a guru, in the footsteps of the Beatles," he says. En route they came across a group of missionaries in Afghanistan led by Floyd McClung, a leader of YWAM, and committed their lives to Christ.

"The day that I became a Christian and started studying the Bible and found references to God as a potter, I realized that my becoming a potter was not an accident. This gave me a lot of peace to continue pottery, especially since it was expected that I would go into medicine, like my father."

The 62nd annual National Day of Prayer, May 2, will have profound significance for our country. We have an unprecedented opportunity to see the Lord's healing and renewing power made manifest as we call on citizens to humbly come before His throne. The theme for 2013 is "Pray for America," emphasizing the need for individuals, corporately and individually, to place their faith in the unfailing character of their Creator, who is sovereign over all governments, authorities, and men.  To further highlight the theme, Matthew 12:21 was selected as the Scripture for this year:  "In His name the nations will put their hope."  Our Chapel will be open all day, and we welcome you to stop by any time you have a moment.  At 7:00pm, the Prayer Ministry will meet in the Chapel to pray. Everyone is encouraged to join them. At this crucial time for our nation, we can do nothing more important than pray. Thank you in advance for making this spiritual discipline a personal priority and for standing with us as we encourage others to incorporate prayer in their lives.

Mt. Bethel is still accepting women's business clothing and accessories for the Dress for Success ministry at the trailer next to the CAC.  And what better time than spring cleaning to look in your closet for items that you just don't wear any longer -- put those business suits back to work. Dress for Success is a not-for-profit organization that helps disadvantaged women find jobs and remain employed. This includes helping each woman dress appropriately for job interviews and for her new job when she gets it. If you have business clothing or accessories (shoes, purses, jewelry) to donate, please call 404-285-1088 or 678-362-6812, and arrangements will be made. The trailer is no longer open daily to the public.
