Randy                    Thinking Big
A favorite course in seminary is "The History of Preaching," or something along those lines. Preachers-to-be enjoy studying history-making sermons like "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," by Jonathan Edwards, and "I Have a Dream" by Martin Luther King.

A preacher said that as a young man, he often heard the older ministers talk about "unction." It was a mystery and a source of confusion for him as he tried to preach the Gospel with "unction."

What is "unction"? A candidate for ordination was before his Board of Ministry (the credentials committee), "Would you be disgusted if we didn't ordain you this year?" He replied, "Oh no, God has already ordained me. He's just waiting for this Board to get the paperwork done." That's "unction."

Unction to preach God's Word comes from Above.

The Rev. Rick Warren has unction. He led his great church from infancy to 10,000 in worship attendance in 15 short years. How did he do it? In his own words, "God told me not to be afraid and to think big"!

Vision is the key to making an impact for God in this unholy world. "Thinking big" comes from wanting to make an impact for God in this world. Being afraid is the opposite of thinking big.

Are you thinking big for God? Here are some simple steps that will assist you with unction and big thinking:
    1. Spend time daily in prayer, asking God for His vision for your life, and in your community.
    2. Study the needs of your community.
    3. Seek wise counsel from leaders with unction.
    4. Examine your resources.
    5. Accept what God reveals to you.

John Wesley always preached with unction and thought big. He understood there was no magic in small plans. He said, "When I consider my ministry, I think of the world. Anything less than that would not be worthy of Christ, nor of His will for my life. The world is my parish!"

When you are considering your life, your church, do you use unction?

I challenge you to think BIG! God does!
