Character
A Newsweek article stated, "From the East side of Manhattan to West L.A., Americans are agreeing that there are universally accepted precepts of good character . . . and that society is failing to teach them anymore." Warren Wiersbe stated in his book, On Being A Servant of God, "Life is built on character, but character is built on decisions. The decisions you make, small or great, do to your life what the sculptor's chisel does to a block of marble. You are shaping your life by your thoughts, attitudes and actions, become either more or less like Jesus Christ." Wiersbe goes on to say, "We are God's servants, are standing on holy ground, and had better behave accordingly. If nobody else is watching, God is, and He will be our judge." Character does matter. What is to blame for the decline in morals and personal character in America today? A breakdown of the family was cited in 77% of those surveyed. Paul writes in Romans 12:2, "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God - what is good and acceptable and perfect." The simple truth of the matter is that the Boy Scouts of America have instilled character into the lives of boys and young men everywhere. It is God whom declares what is "good, acceptable and perfect" through His written Word. The church and the Scouts are two sources that make a positive difference in a society that has largely lost its character. We must strive to set the example of God's standard in a world that desperately needs to see character in Action! God bless you Boy & Girl Scouts, my hope and prayer is that the Scouts and the United Methodist Church will continue to keep our focus on the character that God honors. Randy Mickler

The sign of the cross is not removed during the day, allowing all who see it to know of the individual's acceptance of, and allegiance to, Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

Boy Scout Sunday is February 10. Here is a report on our Boy Scout & Cub Scout Troop:
Mt. Bethel Boy Scout Troop 1011 completed its 40th year of scouting in 2012. The Troop has over 110 active Scouts and has produced 245 Eagle Scouts. The last thirty six years Troop 1011 has received the National Quality Unit Award and National Camping Award and has also been on the District Honor Roll. During 2012 Mt. Bethel scouts and adult leaders performed over 3,000 hours of community service including Eagle projects, work during Great Day of Service, and Scouts serving as counselors at Camp Hope. The 2012 Scouting for Food Drive collected over 5,000 items for MUST ministries. The Troop served in numerous Flag ceremonies, had 14 campouts, 2 backpacking hikes, 2 summer camps, merit badge clinics, 3 Courts of Honor, 11 Eagle Scout Awards, and 1 high adventure trip. Last year Scouts earned 300 merit badges in 77 categories, over 100 rank advancements, 16 religious awards, 3 Scouts reached the 100 camping nights milestone, 1 Scouts was inducted into the Order of the Arrow, 4 Scouts attended Georgia Boys State and 24 Scouts attended a high adventure trip.
