Randy The Baby Grew Up!

The Christmas story is the story of a baby. This is a part of its external pull on the minds and hearts of us all. But it is also a liability. A great many people become so entranced with the beautiful story of a baby in a manger that they miss the main point of the story, and therefore do not feel the compulsion which it lays on life. We can become so charmed with the story of a baby that we grow sentimental about it - it does not ask that we do anything about it - it does not demand any vital change in our way of thinking and living.

The chief point of the nativity story is that the baby grew up! He grew up to become the sternest challenge to a world of hard power that the world has ever seen. He was no sentimentalist; He was a true realist! Everything opposed to love and brotherhood in our world, He declared flatly, is doomed and damned - for the reason that at the center of the universe is a God of loving purpose to all people.

The great question for us is this: Is our Christmas still only the story about a baby, or is it more, a deathless story of a Man, the Son of Man, into whom the baby grew, who can redeem the world from its sins, and who calls us into partnership with His great and mighty purposes?

Perhaps, all of us adults should strive to celebrate a grown-up Christmas this year. Today would be a great time to focus on the Man the baby became and seek to honor His life by taking seriously the challenges He addressed.

Let us forgive others as we expect (and hope) to be forgiven.
Let us extend grace to those who do not deserve it, as we, ourselves, are undeserving of His grace.
Let us be as merciful to others, as we hope He is merciful to us.
Let us give to those in need of love, as we hope to receive through His love.
Let us remember that Christmas is not our birthday, and remind ourselves to give Him first place in our lives.

The Apostle Paul focused upon the Savior the baby became and instructed us to do the same in Romans 12:9-18, "Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints, extend hospitality to strangers . . . "

That's a Grown-Up Christmas!
Let's celebrate the Savior the baby became!

College and Young Adult Ministry

The College and Young Adult Ministry is hosting a retreat at Mt. Bethel December 20 & 21. The retreat is more of an old school lock-in that many of us attended in middle school. This is one reason it is called REVERSE, because we are taking a step back into our past. We will begin REVERSE with a PURSUIT at 7pm on December 20. After PURSUIT, we will take a step back into our younger days. We will eat, play games, have fun, stay up late and sleep at Mt. Bethel. The good part is there is no waking up early as we will get to sleep in late (late for most) and wake up to a pancake brunch. We will continue games and fun until around 2pm. We will go to Chick-fil-A for a late lunch. After our lunch we will load up the buses and head to downtown Atlanta to have a cookout with our friends at SafeHouse. We will serve dinner and share Christmas, music, food, and gift bags for all who come.

On December 21, we will have a Christmas cookout at SafeHouse Outreach Ministries in downtown Atlanta. We are going to have dinner and share community with the homeless. We are also going to give a gift bag to each person that comes that will include socks, gloves, hand warmers, a mini flashlight and a hat. A night full of community and fun, not for service, but to lovingly spend time with our friends downtown. All are welcome to join us at SafeHouse. It will begin at 6 and end when the last person leaves. If you will not be able to attend, we would love for you to be a part by making a donation of the five items in the yellow barrels placed inside the doors at the CAC and in B207.

We will be having Winter PURSUITS December 13 & 20. The on one 20th will begin REVERSE but you don't have to attend REVERSE if you are only able to make PURSUIT. PURSUIT will begin at 7pm in the Upper Room. If you have any questions, please contact Taylor Pair or Gaylyn Kelly.
