Randy
Choir and Musician Appreciation Sunday

Even the most reserved University of Georgia student or alumnus can be roused when the strains of "Glory to Old Georgia" fill the stadium as the Bulldogs move to another gridiron victory, and I am sure the same can be said of alumni and students of Georgia Tech when the Yellow Jackets Band strikes up "Rambling Wreck." I remember how Navy jet fighter pilots, who otherwise fit the "Top Gun" image of always being in control of their emotions, wiped away tears when they sang, "The Navy Hymn" during a special service of worship.

Since the dawn of civilization, every movement and up-swelling in history and every pivotal passage in human life have been accompanied by some kind of music, because God knew we needed to sing and express through music what was too powerful for mere words. That is why, from the beginning, the Church has sung the faith, carrying on the tradition believers had known in the Jewish synagogue.

God help us if we ever stop singing, if in the name of a kind of deadly "spectatoritis" we let others do our singing to be entertained in the name of worship. Choirs and musicians in a church are wonderful - and we at Mt. Bethel are blessed with the best - but choirs cannot and must not replace the congregation raising combined voices to praise God. When a congregation stops singing or sings as John Wesley put it, "as if it were half dead or half asleep," that congregation will soon fade away, its lethargic hums and grunts are a death rattle. The Gospel should be so alive in us that we cannot help but sing with power and joy!

Our choirs and musicians lead us in our praise, and they do a wonderful job! God has blessed us through their ability and devotion. Join us this Sunday as we join together, choirs, musicians and congregation in praise and adoration to our Heavenly Father.

God Bless You,
Randy
