The Library's annual Summer Reading program runs June 11 - August 9, 2014. Participants track their reading during the summer to earn prizes provided by local sponsors. 

 

We offer summer reading for all ages, and you can pre-register starting today at www.cmlibrary.org/summerread.

  • Wee Read for ages 0-3
  • Children's Summer Reading for ages 4-11
  • Teen Summer Reading for ages 12-18
  • Adult Summer Reading for ages 18 and up

This is why Summer Reading is important.
Summer Reading primarily aims to encourage reading during the summer because reading has been proven to help curb summer "learning loss" so that children and teens can return to school in the fall ready to pick up where they left off academically. This is a key component in the Library's year-long support of educational success in Mecklenburg County. It's also an opportunity for preschoolers to gain early literacy skills and for adults to read and inspire young people to read.

Summer Reading on the Green features kids' rock band Lunch Money, June 13.

 

Summer Reading Kickoff on the Green

Friday, June 13 at 10:00 a.m., Davidson Branch.

Enjoy the music of kids' rock band Lunch Money and literacy activities on the Green in front of Davidson Library in this community kick-off to summer reading. The festival is hosted by Cornelius, Davidson and North County Regional libraries.

Preschoolers have fun learning about money!

This year, PNC has provided generous support to make possible an exciting series of fun workshops that help teach very young children about money. ImaginOn, Morrison Regional, and University City Regional branches will each be hosting fun financial literacy festivals, plus we're offering ongoing Preschool Storytimes that invite children to have fun learning how people, things and money have value. These programs have been made possible thanks to the generous support of PNC's national Grow up Great initiative, to help prepare children from birth to age five for success in school and life. Terrific Tuesdays at ImaginOn

This popular collaboration with Children's Theatre of Charlotte will return this summer, and tickets will be available starting June 4th. These FREE CTC performances are a perennial favorite and there's a great line-up of performers and special guests this year. Performances are FREE but tickets are required (and they go quickly)! Many library branches are planning Rookie Science and other STEM-based programming to help keep young minds excited about these subjects throughout the Summer months. Check your local branch.

This summer, explore possibilities with a spirit of "I can"... with help from your library! Here are just a few highlights of the teen programs in store.

Teen Summer Reading: I Can Be a DJ
Test out the turntables with local DJ Kwad-T and learn what it takes to be a DJ. This hands-on program will teach you the tips you need to get started as a DJ. Learn More

3Doodler pen!
Teen Summer Reading: I Can Be a Chef
Learn what it takes to make a delicious dish from scratch while participating in our Teen Cooking Challenge. During this hands-on program, teens will learn about the challenges and rewards of a career in this field, as well as how to read a recipe and measure ingredients. Learn More

Teen Summer Reading: I Can Create 3D Objects
Heard of 3D printing? Join us to learn about this growing field and experiment with how to make 3D objects using 3Doodler printing pens. Learn More

Destination Freedom: Music and History from the Civil Rights Era
Presented by the Levine Museum of the New South, this interactive presentation spotlights key events from the Civil Rights Era through discussion, song, and historic images. Learn More

  

Traveling Through Latin America with Music / Viajando a través de Latinoamérica
Explore Latin America through a combination of jazz, blues, and folk music via the acoustic performances of local singer Ana Lucia Divins and guitarist Carlos Crespo. Audience: Adults, Teens (12-18) Learn More

Tom Higgins, author of Racing Into the Past, is a retired sports reporter from The Charlotte Observer who covered stock car racing and the NASCAR circuit for forty years.
