February Highlights

February 15th is Library Day at the Gantt          

Present your Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Card for free Admission to the Gantt Center


The Gantt Center and Charlotte Mecklenburg Library are partnering to bring you a great day highlighting the link between literature, history, and art. Show your library card at the Gantt Center's Guest Services desk and receive free admission. Explore the Center's current exhibitions, participate in story time, and create your own keepsake in a workshop led by author Kelly Starling Lyons! Book displays and a session on special resources offered by your library system will round out this great day.

Have you ever wanted to build your own website? What about developing your own app?

Charlotte Mecklenburg Library now offers access to Treehouse, a FREE online video and interactive learning platform that teaches people how to design and develop websites and mobile apps. Classes include coding languages like HTML, CSS, PHP, and Ruby, as well as creating iPhone and Android apps. Access is available with your Charlotte Mecklenburg Library card at www.cmlibrary.org/online/treehouse.asp.


Treehouse offers unlimited access to more than 1,300 videos, covering topics from basic HTML coding to JavaScript to app development for iPhones, iPads, and Android smart phones. Learning with Treehouse is project-based, so you learn by doing. Projects are taught through a combination of short videos, code challenges, and quizzes to maximize engagement. You keep track of your accomplishments through gamification - earning badges to mark your progress.

 

In addition to projects, Treehouse also has Learning Adventures that has curriculums designed to get students job ready.

Get FREE help from financial specialists and college aid professionals to complete and submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) electronically. Free Tax Return Preparation for You by Volunteers

 

The Family Financial Literacy Coalition is coordinating free income tax assistance for low- to moderate-income seniors and families. Trained volunteers, in cooperation with the IRS, will prepare and electronically file your individual tax return. Sessions will be at various locations in Mecklenburg County, including some libraries. Learn more at

Volunteer Opportunity: Technology Helpers

Are you interested in helping people with technology?  Do you enjoy learning new things and interacting with others?  Then we have the perfect volunteer position for you at the Independence Regional Library!  Become a Technology Helper and change lives by assisting others with using the Internet, creating email accounts, learning computer programs (such as Microsoft Office), and helping people with online job searching (including resumes).  As a volunteer, you will acquire new skills and gain recognized work experience while helping the Library achieve its goals!

Every Child Ready to Read: For Me, for You, for Later™ 


Come learn about the five early literacy practices, along with interactive math activities you can use to help your child learn financial literacy skills. Parents and caregivers come prepared to play and learn together with your child. This program was made possible thanks to the generous support of PNC's national Grow up Great initiative. Lunch will be provided.

Library selects Ray Bradbury's classic dystopian novel 
Fahrenheit 451 for 2014's community read.
 

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury has been chosen as Charlotte Mecklenburg Library's One Book community read with events planned for April 13-19, 2014, to coincide with National Library Week. The Library will be encouraging adults and teens throughout the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community to read the same book and to come out to readings, book discussions and other programs that bring the book's themes to life. We'll share more details in future issues of this newsletter as activities are planned, and you can always find the latest updates at ww.cmlibrary.org/onebook.

Library announces Strategic Plan for 2014-2017

 

The Library has a new Strategic Plan, which was informed by feedback from more than 5,000 community members just like you. Thanks to this new roadmap, the Library of 2017 will be more relevant, engaged, accessible, digital, and sustainable. To learn more about the Strategic Plan, including opportunities to discuss it with your fellow citizens and Library leadership, visit www.cmlibrary.org/stratplan. There you can view documents, learn about the creation of the plan, and see a calendar of upcoming public events.  

 

 

 

Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Foundation: Building Momentum in 2014 

 

Two months after a $175,000 challenge was issued by Bank of America and Library and Foundation Leadership, the community responded with more than $183,000 in donations. Thanks to the generosity of Charlotte Mecklenburg citizens, civic groups, foundations and corporations, the challenge yielded a total of $183,180 from 825 donations. Funds raised from the challenge support Library priorities, including general library services, books and materials, programming for all ages, and the effort to grow an endowment for future needs.
