Labor Day holiday and return of Sunday hours.
All libraries will be closed for Labor Day on Monday, September 2. Sunday hours will return after Labor Day to the regional libraries, Main Library and ImaginOn. Starting on September 8, these eight locations will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays. See schedule.

Summer Reading success:
21 million minutes of reading!

The 2013 Summer Reading program officially ended a few weeks ago. This year, 24,280 individuals signed up for the program, and participants documented more than 21 million minutes of reading -- a 52% increase over last year! Learn more about the success of 2013 Summer Reading.

Banned Books Week is September 22 - 28.
Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating our freedom to read. It is typically held during the last week of September and highlights the value of free and open access to information. Celebrate your freedom to read by checking out a banned book or joining us at the library for Banned Books Week events. Learn more. 
Friends of the Library Rock & Read 5K
Saturday, September 14, at Plaza Midwood Branch Library
Rock and Read Kids Dash
This year's Rock & Read 5K Run/Walk will kick off and finish at a new location -- the Plaza Midwood branch! The event includes music at every mile of the race, a 1-mile Fun Run, and a Kids' Dash and Kids' Zone featuring Chubby of the Charlotte Checkers. Participants and spectators will enjoy a festival atmosphere at the finish line including live music, food and drinks. Proceeds benefit the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library.

Entry fees are as follows: Now through Sept. 13, the 5K Race is $25, the Kids' Dash is $5 and the 1-mile Fun Run is $20. Prices increase the day of the race (Sept. 14).  More at www.cmlibraryfriends.org.
What might Charlotte have looked like in 1775? Visit Main Library to find out. 
Through December, the Library will be hosting "Colonial Charlotte: A Diorama" on loan from the Charlotte Museum of History. The diorama is a depiction of what the colonial village of Charlotte might have looked like in 1775, when settlement of the area had just begun and very few people lived in the town. The exhibit is in Main Library's Learning Studio, and can be viewed during library operating hours. Learn more. 

Early Voting in libraries during the 2013 Election. 
Some public libraries will once again be used as polling locations during Early Voting. See a schedule of Early Voting dates and times for the 2013 Election.

Freegal With a library card, you can access a wealth of free downloads through our partners, like Freegal, a downloadable music service offering access to Sony Music's catalog of legendary artists. 

Simply visit cmlibrary.org/downloads and choose a digital download option to browse our collection of downloadable media. You can read, watch or listen on a computer, a portable music player or other mobile devices in a variety of formats. To get started, you will need your library card. (Some services require creation of additional account.)
Call to visual artists: Hispanic Heritage Month at Libraries
For Hispanic Heritage Month, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library is inviting visual artists to lend a piece of art (or two) from September 15 to October 15. Impress your teachers! This class introduces you to websites and online resources with accurate information to research topics for school projects. We will explore some databases and how to cite from them for homework.

Readers Theatre: Drama-Rama
Develop reading and comprehension skills by using scripts adapted from children's literature to increase your presentation and public speaking skills. For ages 8 - 11.

For teens
Want to go to college, but not sure how? Our free Operation College Launch workshops can help.

All workshops are designed to provide teens (and parents) with the information they need about their future beyond high school. Workshops are held at various libraries from September through April. 



Teen Book Club - Don't Ask Y
A book discussion club for girls facilitated by teen volunteer Emma. We are looking for new members. Pick up the first book of the season at this meeting. Girls 12 years and up are welcome.
Excel Basics for Teens
Learn how to create, edit and save a basic spreadsheet in Microsoft Excel 2007. Designed for teens with basic computer skills and familiarity with Word. Registration is required.

Join in for some fun with a variety of hands-on science experiments and projects.
Manga Book Club
Join us on the 3rd Thursday of each month for a discussion of a graphic novel. This month we will be discussing Yotsuba&! Vol. 1. Light refreshment will be provided.
