Holiday Closings:

All libraries are closed on July 4 for Independence Day.

 

Summer Hours:

Libraries are now operating under summer hours, during which all locations are closed on Sundays. Summer hours run from Memorial Day to Labor Day each year.

Arthur's World
Special Summer Exhibit at ImaginOn - Arthur's™ World
In Arthur's™ World, children engage in role-playing and reading activities in their favorite Arthur settings. The exhibit includes Mr. Ratburn's Classroom, the Elwood City Library, The Read Family Kitchen and The Backyard Sleepover. Children can even dance in front of a ChromaKey wall that inserts them into some favorite Arthur TV scenes. Fun, Arthur-related activities are designed to reinforce the messages behind the popular book and television series: that being smart and into books is cool, and that kids can face and resolve real-life dilemmas. It's almost time for kindergarten! At this program, rising kindergartners participate in stories and activities that build pre-reading skills and help prepare children for success in school. Events take place at multiple library locations. See schedule.

Storytimes and more storytimes!

Did you know that even if your child isn't yet in school, there are many things you can do to prepare him or her for reading? Learn more about early literacy activities by joining us at the library with your child for a storytime! No matter how young your child is, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library has age-appropriate programs that include stories, songs and movement activities that develop the skills that young children need in order to read and write. Writing Workshops With Local Authors
Teens can learn writing skills with a local writer and instructor. This are each stand-alone programs, not a series. Audience: Teens (12-18)

Cartooning for Teens with Al Bigley
Learn about professional cartooning and explore the commercial art world with Al Bigley, a local artist and author. Participants will have a chance to draw and gather feedback from the presenter. Audience: Teens (12-18)

RUN (OR WALK) TO SUPPORT YOUR LIBRARY

 

Sign up for the Rock & Read 5K in September.

The Friends of the Library will be hosting the 4th annual Rock & Read 5K September 14, 2013, to benefit the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library. This year the race has moved from the Scaleybark neighborhood to the Plaza Midwood area. 

 

Once again, you will enjoy music at every mile of the race and a festival atmosphere following the event in front of the Plaza Midwood Library branch.  After finishing the race, please join us for a wide array of entertainment including live music, food, and drink, cash prizes for winners, as well as a Kids Zone! With bands at every mile, a great cause to support, and activities for every age group, what are you waiting for?  All details and links to race registration can be found at www.cmlibraryfriends.org. Here's the scoop about Summer Reading 2013
  • It's online! Summer reading for all ages is online, and you can sign up at www.cmlibrary.org/summerread. If you don't have a computer at home, come to the library and sign up using one of ours. Then just track your reading online. 
  • Just like previous years, participants who finish reading the required number of hours will be eligible for great prizes.
  • We'll have exciting programs in library branches all summer long to complement your summer reading experience. Many are featured in the article at the top of this newsletter. Visit cmlibrary.org/programs for hundreds more!
