Joe and Terry Graedon of The People's Pharmacy discuss making sense of the advice you receive and news you read. Take the best information from folk wisdom and confusing health headlines. Learn easy ways to prevent or treat health problems. Audience: Adults and Seniors About the Graedons: In 1976, when The People's Pharmacy was originally published, it was one of the first books providing drug and health information to consumers. It went on to become a number one bestseller. Since then, Joe and Terry Graedon have gone on to write 18 additional books. Kids, don't forget to sign up for Summer Reading for a chance to read your way to fun and prizes! See below for details. Paws to Read Children boost reading skills and confidence by reading to a certified therapy dog. This program is offered at several locations throughout the summer. See the full schedule of Paws to Read programs at cmlibrary.org/programs. Storytimes and more storytimes! Did you know that even if your child isn't yet in school, there are many things you can do to prepare him or her for reading? Learn more about early literacy activities by joining us at the library with your child for a storytime! No matter how young your child is, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library has age-appropriate programs that include stories, songs and movement activities that develop the skills that young children need in order to read and write. Teen Summer Reading: Kinect Gaming Tournament Show off your game! Compete against teens at other library branches to see who has the fiercest skills. We will be playing Wipeout! The winner will earn a Teen Summer Reading-themed prize. Teen Fashion Apprentice 2013 Contemplating a career in the fashion industry? Check out the 2013 Teen Fashion Apprentice workshops in June. Have a listen to the "Turn It Up: Teen Radio" program
This program is a Studio i intern-created program that incorporates literacy and public speaking into a curriculum that exposes teens to the industry of journalism and radio broadcast. Teens are mentored by industry professionals and challenged every month to create and produce their very own radio show.
The June Show for Turn It Up: Teen Radio focused on the theme of "Teen Substance Abuse." Teens created their own segments, music, and conducted interviews with Marcella Young (Anuvia Substance Prevention Specialist) and Mason "Quill" Parker (actor from the Children's Theatre of Charlotte play "Liars"). New York Times best-selling author Dorothea Benton Frank shares her wit and humor while discussing her latest novel, The Last Original Wife, and answering questions about her life and books from reading fans. A booksigning and light reception follows Ms. Frank's presentation. Each ticket includes a free hardback copy of The Last Original Wife. This event benefits the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library. Get ready to rock and read! Sign up for the Friends 5K run/walk in September.  The Friends of the Library will be hosting the 4th annual Rock & Read 5K September 14, 2013, to benefit the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library. This year the race has moved from the Scaleybark neighborhood to the Plaza Midwood area. Once again, you will enjoy music at every mile of the race and a festival atmosphere following the event in front of the Plaza Midwood Library branch. After finishing the race, please join us for a wide array of entertainment including live music, food, and drink, cash prizes for winners, as well as a Kids Zone! With bands at every mile, a great cause to support, and activities for every age group, what are you waiting for? All details and links to race registration can be found at www.cmlibraryfriends.org. What comes to mind when you think about summer? Swimming? Summer camp? Barbecues? Music in the park? This year, why not make reading and sharing books part of your summer fun?
Here's the scoop about Summer Reading 2013
- It's online! Summer reading for all ages is online, and you can sign up now at www.cmlibrary.org/summerread. If you don't have a computer at home, come to the library and sign up using one of ours. Then, beginning June 11, you can start tracking your reading online.
- Just like previous years, participants who finish reading the required number of hours will be eligible for great prizes.
- We'll have exciting programs in library branches all summer long to complement your summer reading experience. Many are featured in the article at the top of this newsletter. Visit cmlibrary.org/programs for hundreds more!
